Using soaker hoses used in gardens, farmland or greenhouses can save water,
time and even money.
A soaker hose also named as weeping hose. It is an all-wall drip hose, seeps water in the
area beside it.
Unlike regular pipes, a soaker hose is porous so water can seep
gently along the entire length of the hose. It is very efficient because it delivers
water directly to the roots of the plant without wasting a drop in the process.
Using sprinkler or furrow irrigation may cause some of the water to evaporate
or run off before it reaches the plant's thirsty roots. Some studies have shown
that soaker hoses can reduce water usage by 30% to 50%!
Compared with drip irrigation, the soaker hose has the advantages of not
being easy to block, no complicated water inlet head, reduced maintenance
labor, and low total cost.
How to use your soaker hose:
Using a soaker hose is easy - just follow these steps:
1. If your soaker hose is new, loosen it and let it place in warm sunlight for an
hour or so. This loosens the coiled like hose, making it easier to lay straight.
2. Connect the fitting of the soaker hose to the water source.
3. Let water run through the hose for a few minutes to flush the hose. It's a
good idea to flush a new soaker hose before using it, and again once or twice a
year to remove any build-up inside it.
4. Select the suitable fittings:
If the area to be irrigated is small and close to a faucet, you may only need a
soaker hose. A tap-specific fitting can be used to connect the soaker hose
directly from the tap.
However, if the area to be irrigated is large and there is no faucet, and multiple
soaker hoses may be required, you can first use ordinary non-porous pipes (PE
pipes or PVC pipes) to connect to the main water source (maybe need to add a
water pump), and then connect the soaker hose through the connector. At this
time, the corresponding connector of PE pipe or PVC pipe should be used, and
the PE pipe or PVC pipe should be used as the main pipe, and the soaker hose
should be connected through the connector.
5. For rows of flowers, vegetables, shrubs or trees, run the soaker hoses in a
straight line along the row. If they are not planted in a straight line, slight bend
the seepage soaker hose close to each plant to get in and out.
6. For mature plants, the soaker hose should be about 5 cm away from the
plant. For young plants or annuals, closer spacing is recommended, as they
have shallow roots.
7. If the soil is sandy, the spacing between each row of soaker hoses should be
about 30 cm apart. For clay or fertile soil, soaker hoses should be laid about 60
cm apart in each row. Make extra loops around any plants that need more water.
8. Cover the soaker hose with a 5-8 cm covering to reduce the loss of water
due to evaporation and to protect the soaker hose from sunlight.
9. Hold the soaker hoses in place with landscape staples to prevent them from
moving.
10. Install the water diverter valve. When in use, open the water valve and
adjust the pressure until you see a slow but steady drip.
Use soaker hoses on various plant types:
Shrubs and Trees - Run soaker hoses along the roots of each shrub or tree,
spaced appropriately for your soil type.
Flower Bed - Even if you don't have a long, straight row of plants or vegetables,
simply wrap the soaker hose around each plant about 5 cm away from the
plant.
Containers - Plants in raised beds or pots can still take advantage of the soaker hose; simply run the soaker hose through the area to be irrigated. Note the
distance specifications mentioned earlier regarding soil and plant types.
Connect the soaker hose to extend the length:
You may need more than one soaker hose if you have larger plots. Remember
that while you connect multiple soaker hoses, the soaker hose closest to the
water source will output the most water. The ends of multiple soaker hoses
will receive less water, resulting in uneven water distribution, which may affect
plant growth in these areas. Dividing the field to be irrigated into small areas
can easily solve this problem.
Zoned Irrigation: Divide your land into zones. Lay no more than 50 meters of
soaker hose for each zone. A zonal water diverter valve per zone makes it easy
to switch the flow of water from one zone to another, thereby distributing the
water evenly throughout the plot.
*With larger main pipe, more areas can be irrigated at the same time.
*Design to lay the main pipe to 2 ends to fill water from 2 ends of each
soaker hose, so that both ends of the soaker hose can enter water at the
same time. Which can double the length of each soaker hose and make the
water outlet of the whole soaker hose more even.
